Ecological and Revitalizing Urban Renewal

Small and medium-sized cities – laboratories for urban renewal

Two-thirds of inhabitants in Germany are living in small and medium-sized cities. Thus, they play an important role not only as residential and living place but also as societal and economic centres. At the same time they are confronted with complex urban development issues.

Demographic change, socio-economic change and ecological challenges need urban renewal strategies, which contribute to national urban development goals, but also consider the specific framework and local action possibilities.

The Denksalon in 2015 focused on challenges, strategies and experiences of ecological and revitalizing urban renewal in small and medium-sized cities. The main research questions which have been addressed in the conference are: What are the challenges of small and medium-sized cities to cope with demographic and socio-economic change and requirements for ecological transformation? What are the differences in comparison to bigger cities? What kind of strategies and approaches are followed by small and medium-sized cities to achieve their objectives? What are the experience of stakeholders regarding the implementation of concrete measures of ecological and revitalizing urban renewal in small and medium-sized cities?

The event was mainly directed to a German-speaking audience.
