Das Themenheft „Left-behind Places or Spaces of Possibilities? Shrinking Cities as Foregrounds for Urban Transitions“ wurde kürzlich im Journal Urban Planning bei Cogitatio Press veröffentlicht. Gasteditoren sind Bettina Knoop und Robert Knippschild vom IZS Görlitz.
Ein zentrales Anliegen der Publikation ist es, schrumpfende Städte neu zu denken und Schrumpfungsprozesse nicht nur als Herausforderung, sondern auch als Chance für urbane Nachhaltigkeitstransformationen und eine hohe Lebensqualität betrachten. Schrumpfende Städte werden weiterhin häufig als defizitär oder abgehängt wahrgenommen werden. Diese Narrative führen zu einem reaktionären Umgang mit der Schrumpfung und können die Entwicklungspotenziale und die Handlungsfähigkeit betroffener Städte einschränken.
In 11 Beiträgen wird untersucht, wie schrumpfende Städte zu Möglichkeitsräumen werden können und welche Grenzen sich dabei auftun – von der Nachbarschaftsebene bis hin zu internationalen Vergleichen.

Thematic Issue on Shrinking Cities has been published in Urban Planning
The thematic issue “Left-behind Places or Spaces of Possibilities? Shrinking Cities as Foregrounds for Urban Transitions” was recently published in the journal Urban Planning by Cogitatio Press. Guest editors are Bettina Knoop and Robert Knippschild from IZS Görlitz.
A central aim of the publication is to rethink shrinking cities and to view processes of shrinkage not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity for urban sustainability transitions and for a high quality of life. Shrinking cities are still frequently perceived as deficient or left behind. These narratives entail a reactive approach to shrinkage and can limit the development potentials and agency of the affected cities.
Across 11 contributions, the thematic issue explores how shrinking cities can become spaces of possibilities and what limitations arise in this process – ranging from the neighborhood level to international comparisons.
